Acting conventions that charge high upfront fees to "meet" casting directors and agents are a well-documented predatory scheme rather than a new concept,

 

Why Acting Conventions are Risky

Upfront Fees: They charge hundreds or thousands of dollars for admission, travel, or "mandatory" classes under the guise of exposure.

 

False Promises: They claim major Hollywood agents or casting directors will attend, but industry professionals often have no affiliation with them.

 

Pay-to-Play Model: Legitimate agents and casting directors do not charge actors upfront fees or get paid to scout talent at cattle-call conventions.

 

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Guaranteed Work: Anyone promising auditions, representation, or stardom in exchange for cash is exploiting your hopes.

  • High-Pressure Sales: Scammers use urgency or threats ("sign today or lose your chance") to force quick payments.

  • Unsolicited DMs: Legitimate casting outreach or representation rarely starts through random social media messages.
